Fishing in the hot, mid day sun is about the least favorite situation I can find myself in. I don’t enjoy the heat and the sweat of mid summer, and consequently, I try to avoid it. Sometimes though, it can get hot early, and when I find myself on the water when it’s brutally hot, I make sure I wear my Stormr UV shirts. It started several years ago, when I decided that I was going to be careful with UV exposure. As you get older and wiser, you realize that skin cancer is nothing to mess with, and being in the outdoors culture, I have seen many friends have issues with this disease. When Stormr gave me the opportunity to test these shirts, I jumped at the chance.
Looks & Quality
Many UV clothing options look generic or obnoxious, but the Stormr has a clean, athletic look to it. Constructed of a micro fiber material, the shirts are very airy and comfortable to wear. They are generously cut so as not to restrict movement, but they are still trim looking. Seams and printed logos are of high quality. The Stormr UV shirts are available in long or short sleeve, and in both men’s and women’s versions.
Functionality
I sweat. I get very uncomfortable, very quickly in hot and humid temperatures, and I used to reach for tank tops to at least get some air circulation under my arms. Problem is, that opened me up to burning and insect bites, which made me even more uncomfortable. The first time I used the Stormr UV shirt, it was a 90 degree day on Wisconsin’s lake Delevan, and I opted for the long sleeved version for this test. I assumed that I would be sweating like a pig in short order, and I assumed wrong. The shirt felt breathable and airy, and the soft micro fiber was very comfortable in the heat. Consequently, I actually sweated little and felt comfortable all day. Since then, I usually opt for the long sleeves to maximize sun protection, and in conjunction with a good UV hat like the Stormr and a UV neck buff, one can fish safely and comfortably on even the hottest days. As a bonus, the Stormr UV shirt makes an excellent underlayer when it’s cold, increasing its usability.
Rating
This is a 10. Good looks, quality construction, comfortable UV protection. And affordable too. Price as tested is $39.95
